Sedation
Anxious or nervous about dental treatment?
Approximately 12% of us are believed to experience “extreme dental anxiety” and around 25% of the UK population suffer from some sort of anxiety before a visit to the dentist. With these statistics we are happy to introduce sedation as an option to make every patient’s visit that little bit more comfortable by knowing these options are available to them.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Many people believe they will be ‘asleep’ throughout treatment, however that’s not entirely accurate. Patients are awake with the type of sedation we use, called Intravenous Sedation.
What is Intravenous (IV) Sedation?
IV sedation is when a sedative is injected directly into a vein. If you are nervous about having dental treatment or you are having a procedure which may cause discomfort, intravenous (IV) sedation is an effective and safe treatment. You will remain conscious and you will be able to understand and respond to verbal commands. It is normal with sedation to not remember the treatment that you have received.
Why do I need IV Sedation?
It is an ideal way of helping you to relax if you are nervous about dental treatment or you are having a procedure which may cause discomfort or distress.
What are the benefits?
While under IV sedation, you will feel deeply relaxed, but you will still be able to understand and respond to requests from the dentist. You will be unaware of the operation and this form of treatment is ideal for patients who wish to avoid the noise and vibration of the drill.
In order to undertake intravenous sedation your suitability for treatment must first be assessed. Somebody will need to be with you on the day of your appointment and remain with you after dental treatment for at least 24 hours. After IV sedation, you must not drive or operate any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours until the effects have worn off.
